Strašnice … the Garden of Prague, the Gateway for Armies…

The eight volume of the long-running project of the City of Prague Museum about the suburbs of Prague presents an area that was included in Greater Prague in 1922. Strašnice is situated in the foreground of Prague that was repeatedly affected by multiple sieges and wars – during the Hussite Wars, Thirty Years’ War, War of the Austrian Succession, and Seven Years’ War; Strašnice also played an important role during the Prague Uprising in May 1945. Accentuating photographs and postcards from the 19th/20th centuries to the 2nd half of the 20th century, the iconographical publication further contains plans and prints that document the social, cultural, and sports life in Strašnice.
